Fall Pest Prevention Guide
As temperatures drop, rodents and spiders seek shelter. Learn how to seal up your home and protect it this fall.
The Great Migration Indoors
When the crisp fall air arrives in the Bay Area, pests start looking for a warm place to spend the winter. Unfortunately, your home provides the perfect shelter. Fall is the most critical time of year for pest exclusion and rodent prevention.
Common Fall Pests
Mice & Rats
Rodents are the #1 fall pest issue. They can squeeze through tiny gaps to nest in attics, walls, and crawlspaces.
Spiders
Many spider species reach maturity in the fall and actively seek mates, making them much more visible in and around your home.
Boxelder Bugs
These overwintering insects gather in large numbers on the warm, sunny sides of buildings before moving indoors.
Yellow Jackets
As natural food sources die off in the fall, yellow jackets become desperate and aggressive scavengers.
Fall Exclusion Checklist
Stop pests from moving in with these essential fall preparations:
- Seal the Gaps: Inspect your foundation and use silicone caulk or steel wool to seal any cracks or holes. Mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime.
- Check Vents: Ensure crawlspace and attic vents have intact, heavy-duty screens.
- Weather Stripping: Replace worn weather stripping around doors and windows. Install door sweeps on exterior doors.
- Firewood Storage: Keep firewood stored at least 20 feet from the house and elevated off the ground to discourage nesting.
- Clean Gutters: Remove fallen leaves from gutters to prevent moisture buildup and rot that attracts pests.
